Gut-Healthy Bone Broth Hot Chocolate

Okay, I KNOW bone broth hot chocolate might sound a bit odd in theory, but hear me out!

When paired with rich dark chocolate and aromatic spices like cacao and cinnamon you only get a VERY subtle hint of umami from the bone broth, just like you would from finishing with a touch of sea salt.

Additionally, I almost always opt to use an unflavored bone broth powder, which makes the flavor of bone broth completely undetectable, however the hormone and gut health benefits remain absolutely noticeable, making this hot chocolate a delicious way to help you feel and look your best all winter long.

Snag my insanely rich and creamy bone broth hot chocolate recipe and details below.

GUT-HEALTHY BONE BROTH HOT CHOCOLATE INGREDIENTS

+ BONE BROTH

Bone broth is rich in minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium essential for fertilitya healthy pregnancy and postpartum healing. It also contains gut-healing compounds like glutamine, glycine, collagen and proline that reduce intestinal inflammation and support your thyroid gland. This unflavored bone broth powder made from organic, free-range chicken bones is my absolute fave (you can add it to basically anything without it affecting the taste). Use code SOFRESH10 to save 10% off your oder.

+ DARK CHOCOLATE

New research suggests dark chocolate feeds the beneficial bacteria in our gut, which uses the antioxidants and fiber from it to make anti-inflammatory compounds with numerous health benefits.  Make sure to choose a brand without any emulsifiers that can disrupt gut and hormone healthThis is my absolute FAVE dark chocolate and you can use the code LAUREN to save 15%.

+ OPTIONAL HOMEMADE MARSHMALLOWS

I love topping my bone broth hot chocolate with these gut-healthy marshmallows made with bovine gelatin, which works to heal and seal your digestive tract.

HOW TO MAKE BONE BROTH HOT CHOCOLATE

Personally, I like to make bone broth hot chocolate powder mix made with unflavored bone broth powder **use code SOFRESH10 to save, which not only makes the taste of the bone broth virtually undetectable but also makes a huge batch you can store in the pantry and use whenever a craving strikes (aka it’s efficient).

If you’re not using powder, you can make a more traditional bone broth hot chocolate recipe by swapping out 1/2 cup of non-dairy milk for an organic, grass-fed liquid bone broth. This version is still rich and delicious, with just a slightly detectable umami finish (much like adding a sprinkle of sea salt!)

BONE BROTH HOT CHOCOLATE CUSTOMIZATIONS

+ DAIRY-FREE BONE BROTH HOT CHOCOLATE

This recipe is naturally dairy-free, as long as you opt to use a non-dairy milk such as coconut, oat or cashew. This dairy-free clean milk alternative is my fave, use code Lauren15 to save 15%

+ PROTEIN-RICH BONE BROTH HOT CHOCOLATE

This hot chocolate recipe is already naturally rich in protein, thanks to the addition of high quality bone broth, which adds 10g per serving! However if you’re looking for an additional boost, I love adding in this unflavored collagen protein powder (use code SOFRESH to save 20%) for 15g of extra protein per serving.

+ REFINED-SUGAR-FREE BONE BROTH HOT CHOCOLATE

This recipe is also naturally refined-sugar-free, thanks to the use of coconut sugar. If making a single serving, you could also opt to swap with maple syrup, honey, or dates, which also add a touch of sweetness without any refined sugar.

BONE BROTH HOT CHOCOLATE GUT HEALTH TIPS

+ PURCHASE A HIGH QUALITY BONE BROTH

There are A LOT of bone broth brands on the market, and not all of them are created equal. To get the most gut-healthy bang for your buck, make sure you’re purchasing a brand that’s certified organic, sourced from free-range or grass-fed animal bones and ideally only contains one ingredient (chicken or beef bones). That also means make sure there are no added fillers, inflammatory oils or sugar. This is my favorite high quality brand and you can use the code SOFRESH10 to save 10% off your order

+ CHOOSE AN OIL-FREE PLANT BASED MILK

Many plant-based milks on the market like oat, almond, etc. contain processed vegetable oils such as rapeseed, sunflower, canola and palm oil, which act as an emulsifier to help keep the texture creamy, however these oils drive up inflammation and have a negative affect on your gut and hormones as a result. This is my favorite oil-free plant based milk brand and you can use the code Lauren15 to save 15% off your purchase.

+ USE A CLEAN DARK CHOCOLATE

Many dark chocolate products contain refined sugars, gums and emulsifiers or inflammatory oils that can disrupt gut and hormone health. I love this clean brand, and you can use the code LAUREN to save 15% off your order.
